Anatomy
A butterfly-shaped gland in the lower anterior neck, wrapped around the front of the trachea just below the larynx.
Function in the body
The thyroid gland makes thyroid hormone, which sets the pace of the body's metabolism.
Why it matters
In breast planning the thyroid is a low-dose structure: it can pick up dose from supraclavicular fields or from arcs and non-standard beams. Protocols list it among the additional organs to consider when VMAT or non-standard fields are used, and the partial breast table gives it a maximum-dose goal.
How to contour
Brouwer 2015 describes the thyroid as two connected lobes located below the thyroid cartilage. It stands out well from the tissue around it on CT. Brouwer gives no further boundary table for it.
